Native American Painting
Like so many woodworkers, I got my start in my dad’s workshop. After completing a couple of degrees from the University of New York at Buffalo I moved to Estes Park, Colorado in 1977. With the help of my wife Debby Hughes, Mountain Woodworks Inc. was established in 1979 with a focus on custom furniture and architectural woodwork.

Most of my work is commissioned directly by the client. The project, from the design stage through completion, is an active collaboration with the client. There is a joy and satisfaction in helping my clients’ dreams come to life. My own designs are a chance to push the envelope and explore new ways of doing things.

Over the past 30 years I have studied woodworking with many of the masters in my field: James Krenov, Sam Maloof, Tage Frid, Allen Peters, Nora Hall and Bruce Haodley. My studies have taken me to Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado and Center for Craftsmanship in Camden, Maine. I have had the good fortune to share what I have learned with a number of apprentices.

I live at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park and I draw my inspiration from the mountains that surround our home. I am also heartened by the realization that the old masters in this field have done their best work later in life. I am approaching 60 years of age and look forward to another quarter century of woodworking.
